The world was a vastly different place ten years ago. In 2006, the Motorola Razr was the most popular cell phone, Pluto lost its planetary status, Taylor Swift released her first studio album, and automatic climate control was a top-tier vehicle feature. In fact, some of the most sought after vehicle features of 2006 include:
- Tire-pressure monitoring
- Occupant-sensitive and dual-stage airbags
- Adaptive headlights
- Rearview camera
Technological evolution has a greater impact on the automotive industry each and every year. As technology constantly changes and evolves, so do our expectations. To further illustrate how quickly vehicle technology changes, here are four modern car features that didn’t exist a decade ago.
#1: In-Car WiFi
Ten years ago, in-home WiFi was relatively standard, but in-car WiFi was unheard of. The majority of today’s drivers have mobile internet thanks to smartphones, but in-car WiFi isn’t just about having Internet access. It could lead to remote software updates and data connectivity capable of giving Bluetooth a run for its money.
#2: In-Dash Apps
Ever heard of infotainment? This new term encompasses the top two expectations consumers have for their vehicle’s dash: information and entertainment. In-dash apps make gathering data about your vehicle and commute extremely simple. With an interface similar to what’s used for smartphones, most find in-dash apps user-friendly. They also make entertaining your passengers much simpler.
#3: Multi-Function Steering Wheel
If you go back a decade or so, a vehicle’s steering wheel was meant to steer the vehicle, and if you were lucky, it also had cruise control functions. Today’s steering wheels also provide audio control, temperature control, and phone connectivity capabilities.
#4: Safety Features
One ongoing feat for the automotive industry is designing and implementing newer and better safety features. A decade ago, it was standard for vehicles to have two front airbags – one for each front seat passenger. Now it’s more common for vehicles to include side airbags and as well as side curtain airbags.
As the rate technology evolves at continues to increase, you can look forward to more and more available features in new cars. Remember staying up-to-date with current technologies is a great way to know you’re getting the right features whether you purchase a new or used vehicle.
