Beyond providing a way to get to and from our destinations, we look to vehicles to provide safety and the peace-of-mind that comes along with it. And even though it’s sometimes easier to just not think about it, auto accidents do happen. Vehicles with high safety ratings are more likely to protect the drivers and passengers if an accident occurs. Which is why I’ve compiled a few of the top SUV safety picks for 2016.
What Qualifies Top Safety Picks?
Vehicles are rigorously tested on their safety features and given reviews and ratings. Today’s recommendations came from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) top SUV picks for 2016.
In order to qualify as top safety picks, a vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Vehicles must also meet or exceed a basic rating for front crash prevention. The following SUV’s all earned their way onto IIHS’s top 2016 safety picks.
GMC Terrain and Nissan Rogue
The 2016 GMC Terrain and 2016 Nissan Rogue include head curtain airbags, front-seat mounted torso airbags, and a rollover sensor that determines side curtain airbag deployment. They also have electronic stability control, antilock brakes, and daytime running lights.
The 2016 Nissan Murano has the added safety features that were listed above for the GMC Terrain and Nissan Rogue, with the addition of a separate airbag designed to minimize a driver’s knee injuries in frontal crashes. This SUV also received a superior front crash prevention rating.
Lincoln MKX and Buick Enclave
The 2016 Lincoln MKX and 2016 Buick Enclave come equipped with the added safety features that were listed above for the GMC Terrain and Nissan Rogue, with the addition of driver and front passenger knee airbags. These separate airbags minimize the potential for knee injuries for drivers and front seat passengers in frontal crashes. The Lincoln MKX also received a superior front crash prevention rating.
Top Safety Picks For You and Your Passengers
Each year, the IIHS develops more and more difficult safety ratings tests, and year after year, vehicles and vehicle manufacturers rise to meet the challenge of keeping people safe. If you’re wondering why these safety features overlap, it’s for a good reason – the features are valuable, dependable, and designed to keep drivers and passengers safe.
Driving a top safety pick vehicle increases the likelihood that, in the event of an auto accident, you and your precious cargo will be kept safe. At Miller Auto Plaza, we know a vehicle is much more than a device to get you to your destination, and I hope each vehicle’s safety rating is an area of focus the next time you shop for a new vehicle.
