Do Not Attempt at Home: 3 Car Repairs Best Left to the Professionals

To be perfectly honest, I understand the allure of do-it-yourself auto repair. There’s something satisfying about discovering, diagnosing, and repairing a problem, especially when it’s your own vehicle. In fact, that sense of satisfaction has a lot to do with why I do the job I do.  When you spend your day around a group of talented auto technicians, you learn just how specialized and valuable the work they do truly is.

Back in April, we covered Three Car Repairs You Simply Cannot Do Yourself, because although it can be tempting to attempt your own auto repairs, it’s not always safe. And, there’s a few more auto repairs in that category. Today, I’m covering three more car repairs best left to professionals.

Car Repairs for Your Auto Technician

Car repairsWhen there’s an issue with your vehicle and something needs to be repaired, it’s not always immediately clear whether it’s something you can or cannot do yourself. Always remember the important role your vehicle plays in your daily life. Most depend on their vehicle for safe and dependable transport each and every day for themselves and their families.

By attempting a significant repair without the right experience, credentials, or tools, you put yourself and others at risk. The following issues and repairs should only be addressed by qualified auto technicians.

Malfunctioning Transmission

A malfunctioning transmission can be attributed to countless problems, and without the proper diagnostic technology, even identifying the appropriate problem can be a struggle – let alone repairing it. Your transmission’s complexity means the issue could be anything: from a solenoid failure, to a software configuration, to a temperature control issue.

Engine Overheating

There are a multitude of dangers associated with an engine that’s overheating. Pressure is a necessary part of a vehicle’s cooling system, and if relieved improperly, it can cause serious burns.

Vehicle Stalling, Hesitating, or Surging

I’ve heard it called a hiccup, jerk, lurch, or jump. If your vehicle has a difficult time getting going after slowing down or making a complete stop, these are issues that only get worse the longer you ignore them. You’ll need a qualified technician to properly diagnose this issue, as the source of the issue could be:

  • Mass airflow sensor
  • Fuel pump
  • Throttle position sensor
  • Dirty/failing fuel injectors

Finding A Reliable Auto Technician

When your vehicle experiences transmission malfunctions, engine overheating, or difficultly accelerating smoothly, be sure to make an appointment with a trusted mechanic to evaluate, diagnose, and repair the problem. When you trust your car repairs to a mechanic or service technician, choose someone who is upfront and honest about what you need and able to explain what you can expect from the service and from your vehicle moving forward.
