At Miller Auto & Marine, our auto technicians spend most their time behind the scenes repairing and maintaining the vehicles we count on to get us from Point A to Point B. Since most of their work happens in the service shop, one thing our technicians don’t get is a lot of face-time with clients. As a way to bridge the gap between customer and technician, I’d like you to meet our tech: Joe Sundermann, Lead Technician in our Lincoln Nissan Service Shop.
Joe Sundermann started working with Miller Auto & Marine 18 years ago as a graduate of St. Cloud Technical College’s Auto Technician program. While his experience working with machines started at an early age, this Lead Technician wouldn’t describe himself as a “car guy.”
Meet Our Tech’s Philosophy
In Joe’s case, his passion lies in the process. He says, “I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what’s wrong with vehicles. There’s a joy of digging in and figuring out how things work and finding what has caused a problem.”
With vehicles, there’s always an answer to why a car is acting a certain way. He instructs newer technicians to look for the smoking gun, because the source of a problem is usually much simpler than one would assume.
Even with 18 consecutive years in the same industry, his job is anything but redundant. In the auto industry, “Everything is always changing, and that’s what keeps the job exciting. The challenge of the new things. Trying to stay on top of things.” In order to stay up-to-date, Joe maintains an ASE Master Certification as well as a Nissan Master Certification.
Meet Our Tech’s Work/Life Balance
Joe cites the great people he works with as the best part of his job. He’s thankful to work in a place with a great group of leaders and coworkers who can talk, joke, and have a good time. Developing this sense of community within his service shop didn’t happen overnight. It took time and effort, but working in a supportive, team-focused environment is worth it.
When he’s not solving vehicle-related puzzles and keeping our travels safe, Joe spends time with his wife and two children. As a family they enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, ice fishing, and hunting. The whole family enjoys biking the Lake Wobegon Trail together.
Words of Wisdom from Joe
On whether he has a favorite vehicle or body style: “They’re all nuts and bolts, go into it with an open mind and see what you find.”
On his workplace community: “In our shop we preach the ‘gung ho’ theory. All you need is people with the same goals and the same objectives.”
On trust: “When we’re looking these vehicles over, our customers trust that we’re catching everything. That’s the reason they’re bringing it to us.”
On service shop stereotypes: “We keep our shop and ourselves very clean. I probably have the cleanest handshake out of anybody.”
At Miller Auto & Marine, our team of technicians helps us meet and exceed service standards time and time again. With their dedication to excellence, our technicians take a comprehensive approach to repairs and maintenance. When you trust us with your vehicle, you can feel confident that our team has the knowledge, expertise, and passion to handle your automotive needs.
